Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE's adventure emirate. It has mountains that reach 1,934 meters above sea level, red desert dunes that stretch into the interior, a coastline dotted with white-sand beaches and man-made islands, and a cultural heritage that predates most of the modern UAE by centuries.
It also has something no other emirate has: the country's first licensed casino resort, Wynn Al Marjan Island, opening in Spring 2027 with a $5.1 billion integrated resort that includes a 20,900-square-meter casino, 22 restaurants, and a 1,530-room luxury hotel.
The emirate welcomed a record 1.35 million overnight visitors in 2025 and is targeting 3.5 million by 2030. Tourism revenue grew 12% year over year. New luxury hotels from Four Seasons, Fairmont, Taj, and Aman's Janu brand are all opening or announced. Direct flights are arriving from Poland, Romania, Russia, Uzbekistan, the Czech Republic, and Saudi Arabia.
This guide covers every major activity and attraction in Ras Al Khaimah, organized by category, with verified prices, practical booking details, and honest assessments of what is worth your time. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie, a beach lover, a culture seeker, or someone planning a trip around the Wynn casino opening, everything you need is here.

Mountain Adventures: Jebel Jais
Jebel Jais is the UAE's highest peak at 1,934 meters. The mountain sits in the Hajar range along the RAK-Oman border, about 60 km from RAK city center. The drive up is scenic and well-paved, with viewpoints along the way. At the top (and along the ridgeline), you will find a concentration of adventure activities that has made Jebel Jais one of the most visited outdoor destinations in the Gulf.
Jais Flight: The World's Longest Zipline
This is RAK's signature attraction and the one that put the emirate on the global adventure tourism map. Jais Flight holds the Guinness World Record for the world's longest zipline, stretching 2.83 kilometers (equivalent to about 28 football pitches) at an altitude of 1,680 meters above sea level.
You fly in a horizontal, headfirst "superman" harness at speeds of up to 150 to 160 km/h, gliding over jagged mountain peaks and deep ravines for approximately three minutes before landing on a transparent suspended platform 80 meters above the ground. It is, by any measure, one of the most dramatic zipline experiences in the world.
Practical details: Tickets from AED 325-360. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:30 AM onward. Arrive 50 minutes before your slot. Minimum weight 40 kg, maximum 120 kg. Closed-toe shoes required (no sandals, flip-flops, or heels). Casual sportswear only. No dresses or skirts. GoPro rental available for AED 129. Book through the official site or Platinumlist.
Jais Sky Tour
If a single zipline is not enough, the Jais Sky Tour is a self-guided aerial tour across six ziplines spanning 5 km of mountain terrain. Speeds average 60 km/h, and the route includes segments ranging from 337 meters to just over 1 kilometer each. The tour also includes a walk across the UAE's highest sky bridge, suspended 300 meters above the valley floor. Budget approximately two hours for the full experience. Tickets from AED 280.
Jais Sledder
A mountain coaster that lets you carve down the Hajar range at up to 40 km/h through hairpin curves with the mountains towering around you. This is the family-friendly option: you can ride solo or with a child. It is a shorter commitment than the zipline or Sky Tour, taking about 15 minutes for the ride itself. Tickets from approximately AED 85-120.
Bear Grylls Explorers Camp
The world's first Bear Grylls-branded camp sits on Jebel Jais, offering hands-on survival training designed by Bear Grylls himself. Activities include rock climbing, abseiling, trekking, via ferrata, archery, axe throwing, fire-starting, shelter-building, and a high ropes course. The camp also features sixteen sustainable mountain cabins with hotel-style comfort (private bathrooms, warm beds, mountain views) for overnight stays.
Courses range from half-day experiences to a full 24-hour survival immersion that includes sleeping under the stars. The camp serves families (kids 8+), corporate teams, and individual adventurers. All activities are on-site or within walking distance. Booking through beargryllscamp.ae.
Hiking and Via Ferrata
Jebel Jais offers multiple hiking and trekking trails for different skill levels. Jebel Jais Via Ferrata combines conventional trail hiking with assisted climbing sections, ziplines, and suspended bridges, led by qualified guides. For those who prefer something less structured, the mountain has marked trails ranging from easy walks to challenging ridge routes. The HIGHLANDER hiking adventure, held annually, draws international participants for multi-day treks through the mountain terrain.
Viewing Deck and Stargazing
The Jebel Jais Viewing Deck offers panoramic views of the valleys and the Gulf below, with binoculars available. At 1,934 meters, the peak's elevation and minimal light pollution make it one of the best stargazing locations in the UAE. Several operators offer nighttime viewing experiences, and the cooler mountain temperatures (noticeably lower than the coastal areas) make evening visits comfortable even during shoulder seasons.
Desert Experiences
RAK's desert landscape is less commercialized than Dubai's, which is a genuine advantage. The tours are more intimate, the dunes are quieter, and you get a sense of space that the more crowded Dubai desert operations sometimes lack.
Evening Desert Safari with BBQ Dinner
The most popular format. A typical evening safari starts around 3 PM with hotel pickup in a 4x4 Land Cruiser. You spend the first hour on dune bashing through RAK's distinctive red sand dunes, which is essentially a roller-coaster ride over desert terrain driven by experienced drivers. After that, the pace shifts: sandboarding, camel rides, falcon holding, and henna painting at a Bedouin-style camp. As the sun sets over the dunes (this is the moment photographers live for), the camp fires up a BBQ dinner with grilled meats, salads, and Middle Eastern dishes. Cultural entertainment follows: belly dancing, Tanura spinning, and fire shows. You are typically back at your hotel by 9 to 10 PM.
Pricing: From AED 150 for budget operators to AED 364 for premium packages. Most include hotel transfers, dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, BBQ dinner, and entertainment. Quad biking and dune buggy rides are usually add-ons at extra cost.
Overnight Desert Camping
For a deeper experience, the overnight option includes everything in the evening safari plus a night spent in a Bedouin-style chalet at the Bedouin Oasis Camp (the only authentic camp in RAK's desert). After dinner and entertainment, you sleep in a furnished chalet, wake to the sounds of the desert, and watch the sunrise before breakfast and hotel drop-off. Premium chalet camping runs approximately AED 500 per adult, AED 150 for children. This is the pick for photographers, couples, and anyone who wants the desert without the rush.
Quad Biking and Dune Buggies
Available as standalone experiences or safari add-ons. Quad bike tours let you drive your own ATV across the dunes with a guide, while dune buggies offer a similar experience in a larger, caged vehicle suitable for those less comfortable on open ATVs. Pricing varies by duration and operator, typically AED 200-400 for a 1-2 hour session.
Beaches and Water Sports
Al Marjan Island Beaches
Al Marjan Island is a man-made archipelago extending into the Arabian Gulf from the RAK coastline. It is home to the highest concentration of beachfront resorts in the emirate, including Rixos, Hilton, Movenpick, and the upcoming Wynn resort. The beaches here offer calm, clear water, white sand, and views across the Gulf. Most are resort-operated (access with a hotel booking or day pass), but the island's public areas are accessible to visitors. This is also where the Wynn Al Marjan Island's 420-meter private beach will sit when it opens.
Flamingo Beach (Muairidh Beach)
A popular public beach known for its two large flamingo statues. It is a local favorite with a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a low-key beach day without the resort price tag. Free entry.
Water Sports
RAK's coastline supports a full range of water sports, primarily operating from the Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra areas:
- Kayaking and SUP: Mangrove kayaking is one of RAK's unique offerings. Paddle through the quiet, sheltered waterways of the mangrove forests along the coast. Tours run 1-2 hours, from approximately AED 100-200
- Jet Ski: Available from multiple operators on Al Marjan Island. 30-minute sessions from approximately AED 200-300
- Parasailing: Fly above the Gulf with views of the coastline and the mountains beyond. Sessions from approximately AED 250-400
- Scuba Diving and Snorkeling: RAK's waters are clearer and less trafficked than Dubai's. Several operators run dive trips for certified divers and introductory courses for beginners
- Flyboarding and Wakeboarding: Available at select resort water sports centers along Al Marjan and Al Hamra
Cultural Heritage and History
RAK has a historical depth that most visitors do not expect. This is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the UAE, with archaeological evidence dating back thousands of years. The cultural attractions here are free or nearly free, and they provide a counterpoint to the adrenaline-focused activities that dominate the tourism marketing.
Dhayah Fort
The UAE's last remaining hilltop fort, built in the 19th century from mud-brick on a cone-shaped hill overlooking the Dhayah oasis. The fort played a pivotal role during the British attacks against the Al Qawasim tribes in 1819 and is one of the most historically significant sites in the northern emirates. The climb to the top takes about 10 minutes and rewards you with 360-degree views of palm gardens, the Hajar Mountains, and the sea. Free entry. Located about 18 km north of RAK city center.
Al Jazeera Al Hamra
Often called RAK's "ghost village," Al Jazeera Al Hamra is one of the last remaining traditional coastal settlements in the UAE. The village was inhabited until the 1960s and contains all the elements of a historic Emirati neighborhood: coral-stone houses, a mosque, a watchtower, and a small souq. Unlike reconstructed heritage sites, this is an actual abandoned village, largely untouched. It sits near the Al Hamra area, about 15 minutes from Al Marjan Island. Free to visit, though it is not formally maintained as a tourist attraction.
National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah
Housed in a centuries-old fort in the western part of RAK city, the museum holds an extensive collection of archaeological and ethnological artifacts. Exhibits trace the region's history from its earliest settlers through the Islamic period. It is a compact but genuinely informative museum, worth an hour of your time if you have any interest in the cultural context of where you are.
Suwaidi Pearl Farm
Established in 2005 by Emirati pearl farmer Abdulla Al Suwaidi, the Suwaidi Pearl Farm is one of the only places in the UAE where you can see traditional pearl farming in practice. The experience includes a boat trip to the pearl farm, a demonstration of pearl cultivation, and (depending on the package) the chance to open an oyster yourself. This is one of RAK's most distinctive cultural experiences and something you genuinely cannot do anywhere else in the UAE. Tours from approximately AED 100-200.
Golf
Al Hamra Golf Club
The Al Hamra Golf Club is RAK's premier golf course and the venue for the DP World Tour's Ras Al Khaimah Championship, now in its fourth year. The 18-hole course is designed by Peter Harradine and sits alongside the Al Hamra residential and resort area, with views across the Gulf. Green fees vary seasonally, typically ranging from AED 350 in summer to AED 600 in peak season (October through April). The course is about 10 minutes from Al Marjan Island.
Family-Friendly Activities
Iceland Water Park
Located in the Al Jazeera Al Hamra area, Iceland Water Park offers slides, pools, and splash areas themed around (as the name suggests) an icy Nordic concept. It is a solid half-day outing for families with younger children. Entry from approximately AED 100-150. It sits near Al Hamra, about 15 minutes from Al Marjan Island.
RAK Zoo
Spread across approximately 1 million square meters, the RAK Zoo maintains a natural habitat approach with air-conditioned enclosures and 3D picture walls. It houses some of the UAE's more exotic species and is geared toward families. A manageable half-day visit.
Jais Sledder and Ropes Course
As mentioned in the Jebel Jais section, the Jais Sledder is one of the best family activities in the emirate. The Jais Ropes Course, a one-hour suspended obstacle experience across two levels, is another option for active families with older children.
Wellness, Spa, and Luxury Experiences
RAK's resort corridor along Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra houses some of the best spa facilities in the northern emirates. The Ritz-Carlton Al Hamra Beach offers a comprehensive spa and wellness program. The Waldorf Astoria has its own spa signature offerings. The InterContinental Mina Al Arab features the Avitane Spa. And when Wynn opens, its spa is described as "the region's most opulent spa and beauty destination."
For horseback riding, the Al Wadi Equestrian Adventure Centre sits in the red dunes of the Al Wadi nature reserve, offering desert rides that combine wellness and adventure.
Coming in 2027: Wynn Al Marjan Island
The single biggest addition to RAK's activity landscape opens in Spring 2027. Wynn Al Marjan Island brings a category of experience that has never existed in the UAE or the broader Gulf region.
- Casino: 20,900 sqm gaming floor with 275 tables and 2,000+ machines across two levels, including a VIP Sky Gaming casino on the 22nd floor
- Sea of Dreams: An animated beachfront multimedia show, six times larger than Wynn Las Vegas' Lake of Dreams
- The Showroom: A purpose-built theater for live entertainment and performances
- Dining: 22 restaurants and lounges, including Delilah (the celebrity supper club from Wynn Las Vegas) and an Alain Ducasse steakhouse
- Nightclub: A dedicated nightlife venue following the format of Wynn's XS in Las Vegas
- Marina: 98-berth deep-water marina accommodating superyachts up to 85 meters
- Shopping: Skylit parterre with luxury brands including Rolex

When to Visit
October through April is the prime window. Daytime temperatures sit between 20 and 30°C, evenings cool down to 15-20°C, and outdoor activities are comfortable all day. This is also when the major events happen: the RAK Half Marathon (10,000+ participants), the DP World Tour Championship at Al Hamra Golf Club, the UAE Tour's Jebel Jais stage, and the HIGHLANDER hiking challenge.
May and September are shoulder months. Temperatures rise above 35°C but are manageable for early mornings and evenings. Hotels offer lower rates and the emirate is less crowded.
June through August brings 40°C+ heat and high humidity. Outdoor activities during midday are inadvisable. However, Jebel Jais stays noticeably cooler than the coast, and indoor activities (water parks, museums, resort spas, shopping) remain viable. This is the off-peak season with the lowest hotel rates.
If your primary goal is the Wynn casino opening, plan for Spring 2027. The combination of the casino launch, comfortable weather, and the full range of outdoor activities makes this the optimal window.
Getting There
Ras Al Khaimah is approximately 45 to 60 minutes from Dubai by car, with bus tickets starting at AED 20 and airport shuttles at AED 30. RAK International Airport also has direct flights from multiple European and Asian countries.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ras Al Khaimah worth visiting?
Absolutely. RAK offers a combination of mountain adventure, desert safari, beach relaxation, cultural heritage, and (from 2027) casino entertainment that no other emirate matches. It is less crowded and more affordable than Dubai while being under an hour away.
How many days do you need in Ras Al Khaimah?
Two to three days covers the highlights: a day for Jebel Jais adventures, a day for beach and water sports, and an evening for a desert safari. A full week allows you to experience everything at a relaxed pace, including cultural sites, golf, spa days, and dining.
What is the best time to visit Ras Al Khaimah?
October through April for the best weather. Spring 2027 specifically if you want to be among the first to visit the Wynn Al Marjan Island casino.
Is RAK cheaper than Dubai?
Generally yes. Hotel rates, dining, and activity costs tend to be 20-40% lower than equivalent experiences in Dubai. Desert safaris are more intimate and often better value. The overall vibe is more relaxed and less commercialized.
Can I do a day trip from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah?
Yes. The 45-60 minute drive makes it easy. A day trip works well for Jebel Jais (zipline and Sledder) or a beach day on Al Marjan Island. For the desert safari, you will return late (around 10 PM). For the full experience, an overnight stay is worth it.
What should I wear in Ras Al Khaimah?
Casual, comfortable clothing works for most activities. For Jebel Jais zipline and adventure activities, wear closed-toe sports shoes and sportswear (no dresses, skirts, sandals, or flip-flops). Beach resorts are relaxed about swimwear in pool and beach areas. In public areas and cultural sites, modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) is respectful and appropriate.
Is there a casino in Ras Al Khaimah?
Not yet. Wynn Al Marjan Island opens in Spring 2027 as the UAE's first licensed casino resort. It will feature a 20,900 sqm gaming floor with 275 tables and 2,000+ machines. Read our complete casino guide for full details.
Are there things to do in RAK at night?
Currently, nightlife options center around resort bars, beach clubs, and restaurants on Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra. Desert safaris with BBQ dinner and entertainment are the most popular evening activity. From 2027, Wynn Al Marjan Island will add a nightclub, Delilah supper club, and Sea of Dreams beachfront show to the mix.
RAK Is Just Getting Started
Ras Al Khaimah has spent years building its reputation as the UAE's adventure capital. The ziplines, the desert, the beaches, and the mountains are already world-class. What changes in 2027 is the addition of an entirely new dimension: luxury entertainment and casino culture on a scale the region has never seen.
The combination is what makes RAK's 2026-2027 period genuinely special. You can zip across a mountain range at 160 km/h in the morning, spend the afternoon on a private beach, watch the sunset over desert dunes, and (from Spring 2027) play blackjack at the UAE's first casino before dinner at a supper club designed by the people behind Wynn Las Vegas.
No other destination in the Gulf offers that range.
